Trusted Local Art Teachers

With 50 artist studios under one roof, Art Bias in San Carlos is the largest community of artists on the Peninsula. Some of these artists not only have their studios here, but also teach, have workshops, and/or offer demonstrations. The Art Bias mission is to be a community resource for, and of, artists and those who love art.

SWA is a non-profit organization offering artists a place to learn, share, and exhibit artwork. They offer free demonstrations, as well as an ongoing schedule of workshops.

Joseph Altwer grew up nearby, yet he began his fine art studies in 2005 at the Florence Academy Of Art in Florence,  Italy. Joe has been teaching drawing and painting since graduating in 2009, including 5 years at the Barcelona Academy of Art. Joe now lives and teaches in Half Moon Bay.

Aina Clotas grew up in a small village in northern Spain. She holds a Fine Arts Degree from the University of Barcelona and, after that, she spent three years studying traditional painting methods in the Barcelona Academy of Art. Aina is currently teaching at the College of San Mateo, but she also teaches in her studio in Half Moon Bay.

Clay Life was founded in 2022 in the City of San Mateo as a for-profit community-focused pottery studio. It is a teaching studio where memberships, teambuilding, classes and private lessons are offered in Wheel Throwing, Hand-Building and Sculpture for adults and youths.

Sherry is self-taught artist, and art teacher living here in San Mateo. 

 Local artist and owner Nick Chaboya’s intention is to provide a beautiful space for the artistic community to share, create, discover, and celebrate a diverse array of visual expressions. As well as having a beautiful gallery/retail space, Golden Moon also has a studio space for both children and adult art classes.

A native San Franciscan, Guy Magallanes is self-taught and has painted since childhood.

Guy started teaching in 2005 and continues to teach workshops and weekly classes at his studio in San Carlos.

Micheal specializes in painting San Francisco Cityscapes with oils on canvas, using a palette knife. His paintings can seem photographic in nature from far away, and yet up close you see the juicyness of the individual paint strokes. 

It's no secret that William works here at California Art Supply. Although William teaches locally through San Mateo Parks & Rec, he can also be contacted for private classes.

Rafael conducts public art classes around the San Francisco Bay Area, and also holds private classes in his San Carlos studio. He’s a member of Santa Clara Valley Watercolor Society, The Pacific Art League, The Burlingame Art Society, The Society of West-Coast Artists and the Los Gatos Art Association. He exhibits locally and nationally and has received numerous awards.

Melsa runs under the radar. We know her best as a childrens art teacher, but she's diverse...and elusive. The Atherton Arts Foundation promotes the appreciation and enjoyment of the arts through events, classes, and more. Their classroom is located in the beautiful Holbrook Palmer Park in Atherton.

Prior to Peninsula Museum of Art closing, you would have found Susan Switzer there in her studio/classroom. Now teaching from her home studio, both children and adults enjoy her traditional teaching style.
